Potholes are annoying and at times very expensive. In addition to causing uncomfortable and jarring impacts, they are also estimated to cost drivers in the United States nearly $3 billion annually. Fortunately, Ford is introducing a new pothole mitigation system for the upcoming Fusion V6 Sport.
The system uses onboard computers that analyze signals from 12 high-resolution sensors. When the sensors detect a pothole, the system immediately stiffens the damping so the wheel doesn't fall so far into the hole. This reduces the intensity of the collision with the other side of the hole, and lessens the impact on your wallet.
“We tested and tuned this system by driving over countless potholes – subjecting Fusion V6 Sport to the brutal, square-edged potholes of our Romeo Proving Grounds to finesse the software,” said Jason Michener, Ford continuously controlled damping engineering expert. “It was long hours of not very pleasant work, but the results are well worth it.”
The new Fusion V6 Sport begins rolling into dealerships this summer.
